I like this phone, its well built and has great performance. Also, they have finally unlocked the bootloader which is required for installing custom android ROMs. Very good product.

Motorola the new Apple?! March 13, 2011

Reviewer:  J. K. Ettienne "Alpha"  (Brooklyn, NY USA) -

This phone could have been great if Motorola left it alone! A phone with this much power should have shipped with an OS that can utilize the dual cores unfortunately, it ships with Froyo.

This isn't the worst of it though Motorola had to add their terrible skin Motoblur then lock down the boot-loader. Now this might not affect the masses but it does affect developers and others who want to optimize their apps for dual core or just Tegra powered devices.

Motoblur is hated for those who don't know because it is and always been a resource hog, it tried to make "simplicity" and totally screws up everything especially users contacts, it forces users to use a service not needed or at most not really wanted especially if it was a choice I believe most users would opt out.

The screen on this phone is great with the resolution but it looks like crap because everything is rather small, tiny at best reminding me of XP on a 30 inch display with max resolution unlike Win 7 where icons can be adjusted by size and still look good.

Battery is okay not great but better than most out there. The phone also feels very solid and well built.

Power button finger print reader is a love hate relationship. Some will love it while others will hate it.

At&t service is crap. Downloads are slow and uploads are simply sad dial up is faster at times and thats saying a lot.

Motorola has locked out manual switching to 2G/3G. The phone will do this on it's own and if there is a weak 3G signal but strong 2G it will consistently switch between the two.

Out of Market apps, Motorola has disabled the ability for users to install any apps not from the Market. Now I'm not advocating piracy but in some instances an App paid for by a user has been updated that breaks functionality. A user can simply find an older version of that App from the developer or internet and install and problem gone. Not so with this phone if an App if broken by an update consider yourself screwed from downgrading back to what worked.

In all, this phone had the capabilities of being great however, Motorola seriously ruined it with actions similar to what they were opposed to from the start... "Apple lock down and dictatorship."

In the end I like my freedom and as such this was returned in 5 days. Hope this helps users make an inform and just choice.

This shouldn't be out there! Plain and simple March 12, 2011

Reviewer:  Tony P "Tons"  (SF,CALI,USA) -

I've been using PDAs for over 15 years and smartphones since they showed up almost a decade ago. Initially I was impressed by the phone's features (pretty much beats every other phone on paper). But the bad outrun the good. Sadly I think motorola was in a hurry to get this out just for competition sake and to stand out. The did a really poor job on the features. Half of them don't work properly. I just returned the phone after having it for few weeks. In a way sad to let go of a phone which has so much capability, but then again, they didn't do enough in quality and testing. I thought I was the only person who had some of these issues, but when I googled each time, I found several people facing the same issue (That might be the reason , why it's not listed as top seller on at&t webpage). The HTC Inspire (which is the next option without the front facing camera) stands out as the next top seller (which is a nice phone -- just didn't buy it because I wanted the front facing camera for video conferencing and skype). I was sad to let it go. Here are some of the issues. If you search for this phone on motorola forums and at&t forums, you'll see tons more issues and every single one below.

a) Loses data connection atleast once a day. The only way to get back the connection is to reboot the phone (not putting it in and out of airplane mode , but reboot)

b) The built-in so claimed fm radio is disabled by motorola , so at&t wants you to download streaming radio and use up their data limit

c) Parts of the touch screen will become irresponsive (this is just within a week of using the phone! ). Solution? Reboot again. I had issues here top part of the screen will become touch insensitive and bottom will work.

d) When other at&t phones has 4-5 bars, this will show 1-2 bars in the same high service areas!

e) Drops data and voice calls

f) Easily drops wi-fi connections so often.

g) The Adroid OS is locked by motorola so you can't upgrade to the next version unless motorola provides the upgrade.

h) Randomly pauses your music and and off. Several people have this issue on the motorola forums. Seems like the hardware isn't doing the best with android. Seems due to conflicts on background apps that obstruct music. In a 1 hour travel period I had to pull my phone out evertime atleast 4 times and tap the play button again!

i) Very fragile construction. You drop it once , that would be the end. Can't believe motorola didn't even bother to include a basic case for it.

j) Motorola absolutely doesn't care about the customers. Their customer support has gone downhill. To them , at&t is the customer , not the end users. So you can complain all day long and no one from motorola would bother (read their forums for all raves and rants). I think as they always for most part manufactured non smartphones, they never really handled very good hardware complaints. Only recently they start coming up with competing smartphones and they did bad job.

k) The home page and screens are such a mess. Compared to HTC , and some of the smart phones I owned, it's not intuitive and all over the place. Takes too much space for each App on the home page and wont' arrange properly.

l) The camcorder will work randomly. Depending on the application running in the background, it may simply crash.

m) The phone doesn't support real 4g speeds. It's about 5 times slower than other carriers which provide 4g.
When I returned, then the guy at ag&t store reveals that there'sno real 4g service yet! WTF. Then why would you call it 4g and pay all this money upfront!

n) Muffled voice when on speaker. People complaining that it sounds as if someone is talking from a distance.

Most of the issues I've mentioned is seen on android forums and motorola forums. So this is not just my phone issue. If that was the case, I would have swapped it, not returned it.

It's sad, such a phone with a bit of attention to quality and development could have lead the smartphone industry. But turned out to be a waste.

Motorola Atrix October 6, 2011

Reviewer:  bstevens

I bought two of these phones for my wife & myself. These are good phones but AMAZON sucks. The customer service keeps getting worse by the day. I also ordered the Lap Top Dock for one phone and really enjoy it. But AMAZON customer service sucks once again. Alot of promises and emails later and nothing has changed. After many years of faithful service to amazon and countless purchases I refuse to purchase anything else from them. There are many online retailers that offer the same products and much better customer service. In the state of our economy one would think amazon would try and improve but I guess they can't. Shame on amazon.

Many are defective April 16, 2011

Reviewer:  J. Estrada

Many of these phones are shipping with defective touch screens. There is a thread on the motorola forums here about it, and so far there has been no word from Motorola about a fix.
[...]

Don't buy this phone until they have recalled all defective phones and addressed the issue.

Dont get too excited March 8, 2011

Reviewer:  Ash_texas

Ok let me start by saying this is a decent phone it does what its supposed to do but lacks a lot of features alongwith the major drawback that the battery life sucks... and this is after i doing all the recommended things like my display is 25%.. i dont have any unnecessary apps running no maps running havent been calling anyone much so on and so forth and in-spite all this i am barely getting a day worth of battery life now that according to me is unacceptable... so if i do use the phone heavily i am assuming its gonna drop down to half a day.....
The other thing i found on here is grouping of similar apps like on an iphone 4 is lacking i think it helps you tremendously when u have 100 thousand apps on ur phone and ur trying to find something in a hurry now there is a way u can do this on the atrix but its no where as efficient as the iphone 4.. i have used my wife's i phone 4 and the quality of calls with video chatting without using the wifi is amazing and with the atrix i am afraid to say it sucks too..
The other downside is you cant hide apps in this phone so any financial apps like in a blackberry which i had before which is a another downside according to me...
All is all its a decent phone but not what i expected..

Returned my Atrix March 21, 2011

Reviewer:  Zinger  (Midwest) -

I compared the Atrix to an Iphone4 using Speedtest.net. For me the iPhone4 was consistently 10 times faster than the Atrix. I understood when I purchased the Atrix that 4G was not fully implemented in my area but I did not expect the Atrix to be slower than other phones.

Problem to create a motoblur account March 24, 2011

Reviewer:  ganlan

I just bought a new Atrix and had problem with creating a motoblur account ''"there is a problem with the clock on the device please contact customer service motorola atrix". I searched online and saw a post complaining about the same issue on the motorola support forum, you can search with key word 'logg in to motorola blur problem'
In some older posts, a lot of customers also complain about the clock problem with motoblur with moto CLIQ. I hope it's not a system design error.

Amazon will send me a replacement. But if more people have that problem, I will get a different brand.

Good phone, sadly it's a Motorola March 7, 2011

Reviewer:  John Jordan

I had my Atrix 4G for about ten days and then returned it to AT&T. The phone was great, but you are at the mercy of Motorola. The bootloader is encrypted so you cannot run any version of Android except the bloated version that AT&T and Motorola want you to have. You must use Motorola's Motoblur, which is a means of product activation. The whole purpose of open source software is freedom, but this sure isn't it. I will never buy a Motorola phone again.

Not all that! March 6, 2011

Reviewer:  Patrick

Had my atrix for about 3 weeks. The pentle screen is only averqage, washed out looking. Motorola's blur software is pain. Bootloader is feasably unlockable,an Moto has backed away from supporting development. At&t has this phone throttled so that download speeds are limited to 1.5mb an upload are around 350 kb. This is pour 3g at best far from the sales hype of 4g. At&t has lied to everyone about it's network, an its just now coming to light that they wont have it finished till 2013. Phone has no gyroscope for gameing, only accelerometer. No Hdmi mirroring of the phone to Tv. No 1080p recording, or playback or pictures, the 5 mpic camera totaly messes up photos, they are all dark or with a bluish tint. The lapdock is a very expensive paper weight, a real laptop is much more powerfull capable an cheaper computing device. Not to mention At&t charges extra 20/month for teather the lapdock. As a phone i got good reception quality voice comunication, good battery life, responsive screen. My previous phones have been captivate an motorola razor v3. Atrix is going back, doesnt come close to living up to what its supose to be able to do. Getting LG optimus 2x

ATT has not enabled the 4g March 16, 2011

Reviewer:  Robert A. Noftz "RobertN"  (Boulder, Co) -

I ordered the phone because of all the good reviews I saw for the "phone", but the problem is that these phones are getting slower download speeds than the 3g Iphone because at&t hasn't enabled 4g on their network for the Atrix or Inspire, and they can't tell anyone when their network will be able to provide 4g. Don't believe me go read all the news articles that have come out in the last couple days.I don't see how they can get away with this.

Horrible mistake March 24, 2011

Reviewer:  Janis McBreen

This is the most expensive mistake I ever made. The keyboard is virtually unusable even when rotated. It only works with the pad of your finger, not the tip so your finger has to cover two or more characters and you can only hope you get the right one.

I bought the "laptop" which is a joke. It doesn't do anything that a normal laptop would do so it's just a ploy to get you to spend more money. It says the phone goes into speaker mode when docked so if you get a call you don't have to undock to answer. Okay, but no one can hear you unless you are shouting with your face less than 10 inches from it. What good is that?

This is only for very young people who have a lot of money and time to waste. The programming is obtuse and when you go to the android market you can't see anything much less move around.

Don't waste your money on this one.

awesome phone February 23, 2011

Reviewer:  iabc

Awesome phone! I love it. I bought this phone in a store not on amazon. Wish there is a rating for amazon shopping. I have like $200 worth of giftcards and there is no option to buy using coupons. I don't know why they need my credit card when I am buying directly from amazon. Customer service has no answer to my question and they transferred me to some other deptwho never picked up.

Kept This Phone for A weekend March 10, 2011

Reviewer:  Caress Lepore

I went to AT&T to upgrade from my iPhone 3g to an iPhone 4. I should have stuck to my guns and purchased the iPhone 4. When I got this phone home it was cool for a moment until I tried to download apps and play games. Tango froze, Megajump froze, and every other app I downloaded crashed. Needless to say after the weekend of having it I took it back and got the iPhone 4. What a waste of time.

Why does ANYONE love this junk? April 14, 2011

Reviewer:  T. Turner "consumer advocate"  (CA, USA) -

This phone is a complete piece of garbage. I am sure it was a great phone until AT&T got their greedy hands on it, and blocked ability to install third party aps. One ironic example was I bought the phone from Amazon, yet I can't install Amazon.com's App Store App, how's that work? I called Amazon, they said to call AT&T, 4 hours later...still can't do it. Time for T-Mobile phone maybe a windows 7 device, at least for a little while it will work until AT&T takes them over, and then messes it up to.
