T-Mobile Service
The Sidekick LX operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and is compatible with T-Mobile's UMTS/HSDPA 3G network, which operates on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum. This phone is designed to automatically connect to the best available network (3G or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide faster data speeds when accessing the Web or downloading content from the T-Mobile Web2go content portal. T-Mobile is currently rolling out its 3G network, and it expects by year's end that its high-speed data network will be available in those cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and e-mail on the go.

While this phone is optimized for use with T-Mobile's high-speed 3G network, many of its functions will also work well on the moderate-speed EDGE network. If you plan to access the Internet extensively on your phone, 3G network coverage may serve you best.

Activities that work well on EDGE or 3G networks:

  • Email, instant messaging, and texting
  • Downloading ringtones, CallerTunes, wallpaper, light data files
  • Sending photographs via e-mail or picture messaging
Activities that work best on a 3G network:
  • Viewing content-heavy websites (lots of images or videos playing)
  • Viewing YouTube and other video files (they will play on EDGE, but require loading time)
  • Uploading large files (photos, videos, presentations) to sharing websites
  • Downloading large files from an e-mail or a website

This phone is compatible with T-Mobile's Mobile Backup, a free service that stores your phone's contact information is case your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged, so you do not have re-enter all of your contact information when you get a new phone.

5 out of 5 stars Not a huge improvement from the original LX. November 18, 2009

Reviewer:  Sergio Lamadrid  (Brooklyn, NY) -

I had the original LX for a year before I got this phone. I've had this phone for 2 months now. To be honest I wish I hadn't bought it, just so I could've saved the $250 I spent to get it. While the phone is good, my personal opinion is, is that if you already have the LX, save your money.

Comparing the '09 to the original -

Pros:

Youtube. One of the main reasons I got this phone. I can entertain myself on youtube all day. It's not as advanced as the iPhone, but it does have the basics. Play, pause, fullscreen/normal, volume etc. This is just for basic youtube, don't expect anything flashy.

3G - Enough said. It has 3G Service. Much better, you can even chat on AIM while talking on the phone!

Facebook/Myspace/Twitter apps - Automatically installed, and free. I use facebook all the time, it's a nice little feature when you're on the go.

Better looking design - In my personal opinion the phone design looks a lot nicer, especially the back of the phone.

Much Better Camera - Looks a LOT better than the original LX.

Cons:

Mood lights - One of my favorite things about the old LX, was the lights on the four corners of the phone. They took them off. Just a personal preference of mine, and I know a few others who were dissapointed that the new LX did not have it.

Battery - Now, this might be my battery and not a general issue. However, I noticed that on my old LX, when my phone was low on battery, no matter what I was doing, I would have at MINIMUM 20 minutes to find a charger. Depending on what I was doing, even upto 2 hours. This phone however, once that ! mark appears, you need to RUN to a charger. I've had it where I heard the "battery dying" sound, went to go to the other room and when I came back it was already dead. While the battery life itself IS longer, there's less of a "Warning - Please connect to charger NOW" time.

Not many cons, and definitly the pros outweigh the cons. However, I still personally feel that if you have the old LX, and it's in working condition, to hold onto it. If you can get this phone for less than $200, go for it. If this is your first sidekick in a while; Go for it. Just don't expect much more if you're upgrading from a LX to an LX '09.

Also while it feels that I'm downplaying the phone a lot, don't get me wrong. The phone itself is great. I highly reccomend it to users who want to go on AIM, MSN or Yahoo. There is no AIM/MSN/Yahoo, like on the sidekick.
