The HTC EVO 4G offers new capabilities for a smartphone that require more power, which can impact its battery life more than what you may have experienced using other smartphones.
With the HTC EVO 4G, you have the ability to manage your phone's power consumption to optimize its battery life. These include:
Battery Usage ToolsThe multiple radios on this device will use battery life even when you are not using them.
The 4G radio should only be turned ON when the improved network speed is required for an application, such as YouTube, Web Browsing, or Sprint Mobile Hotspot. When not in use, its important to use the built-in 4G widget (preloaded on Home tile left of center) to turn the 4G radio OFF.
If you have your 4G radio ON, but are no longer in 4G coverage then your device will be scanning in an attempt to re-acquire the 4G network. Your battery can be significantly drained by the scanning processes, so if you know you will be out of 4G coverage for an extended period of time or if you are not acquiring a 4G signal as indicated in the task bar, it would be important to turn your 4G radio OFF.
E-mail Applications SettingsThe e-mail settings allow you to setup peak and off-peak hours for e-mail sync on each email account.
Generally, less frequent syncing equates to better battery life.
Google TalkAs soon as you sign up for the Google Market or Gmail with your Gmail account information, you are also signed in to the Google Talk instant messaging application. The Talk application tracks the presence of your Google Talk contacts in order to let you know who is available to instant message. Each presence change uses a small amount of power even if you do not have the Talk application open.
If you have numerous contacts who are changing presence throughout the day all of these small impacts to your battery can add up to significantly shorten your battery life.

When switching between 3G and 4G coverage, the HTC EVO 4G may experience a very brief interruption of data service as the device switches network connections. During this brief interruption, applications attempting to access data may be unable to do so and may display an error message. Below are some examples of how to proceed if an error message appears on the device. Other data-usage applications may experience a very brief interruption and will continue functioning once the network handoff is complete.

The phone is awesome, minus a few things:
PROS: The display is crisp, bright, and very nice to look at. The touch screen is very responsive, not too hard to use and not too sensitive. Almost every application that I've bought through Market has worked seamlessly with this thing, except for WWF. Web browsing with the phone is a pleasure, and I am satisfied with using it as a substitute for my laptop (for internet) when I'm out and about. It's fast, it works, and the media player plays about 90% of the videos I try to watch on youtube. The kickstand gets it use when I use the alarm clock feature on the phone, but I could have lived without it. The phone is about the size of a 4.3" GPS unit, so it's okay to use as a GPS, although I wouldn't exactly replace a traditional automotive GPS because the phone's navigation features just don't seem as reliable. But if you're walking downtown and need to find a place to eat, it should work just fine.
CONS: The 4G slows it down. (WTH??) Although Sprint coverage maps show the areas I work and live in as being under the blanket of their new 4G service, finding 4G and connecting to it is slow and painful. If you leave the 4G antennae on to use the service, your calls will drop and video players will stall. The video I play on youtube is not noticeable faster with 4g turned on, and web browsing is adequate enough on 3g that I don't go through the hassle of trying to find 4g service when I use the internet. Also, 4g drains my battery even more, bringing down my typical 8-10 hour battery life to about 5-6 hours.
Bottom line is that this is a very strong phone. My previous most recent phones have been through Verizon: Blackberry Tour, Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, Blackberry Curve. The Droid OS is this phone's biggest strength, although Droid should figure out how to use puch technology on emails, because it can take hours to automatically update my emails sometimes. I really like this phone, and although I may sound critical on some points, I consider it as close to perfect that a smartphone can get.
